THE GOSPEL LESSON: Luke 10:1-12, 16-20
The Lord sent out seventy disciples in pairs to prepare the towns for Jesus coming to them. Jesus emphasized that the need for laborers was great, for the harvest of souls is plentiful. Their focus was to remain on spreading the message of Jesus. They were not to be absorbed with material concerns. The power and authority of Jesus would accompany them. The greatest blessing we possess is that also our name is written in heaven!
THE OLD TESTAMENT LESSON: Isaiah 66:10-14
Isaiah points beyond the difficult days that lay ahead for the Old Testament Church who would also suffer in exile because of the sin and unbelief of the nation. Isaiah points ahead to the glory the Lord would bestow on the New Testament Church to whom God would extend peace like a river. The Lord delights in us as a new parent delights in pouring affection on a young child. We are comforted by the gospel of God’s love and forgiveness.
