THE EPISTLE LESSON: Colossians 3:1-11
Having been raised with Christ we will seek those things that are above where Christ is. “Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth” (v.2). The carnal treasure and pleasure of this world only bring the wrath of God. Jesus brings us eternal life. When He appears we will appear with Him in glory. All the wealth and power and pleasure of this world cannot secure that, so shun the ways of the world and stay focused on Jesus.
THE OLD TESTAMENT LESSON: Ecclesiastes 1:2, 2:18-26
Solomon saw what that life was like in the world, what he calls life “under the sun.” He saw that it was vanity. It was a complete frustration a striving for things that kept open up at night and in the end went to someone else who hadn’t worked for it. He also saw the wisdom of life under God. He saw that when one used God given abilities to work for daily bread that one might find great satisfaction in one’s labor. God gives wisdom and knowledge and joy to those who are good in His sight through faith.
