THE EPISTLE LESSON: 1 Timothy 6:6-16
The love of money, the lure of temporal riches is so enticing to the flesh and so dangerous to one’s faith. Many have “pierced themselves through with many sorrows.” Money cannot bring the joy or the security so many hope to find with it. We need to flee these temptations and fight the good fight of faith, laying hold of eternal life that comes to us freely through faith in Christ Jesus.

THE GOSPEL LESSON: Luke 16:19-31
The parable of the rich man and poor Lazarus brings home the reality of true life. While the rich man “had it made” in this life, he had no mercy, he had no faith. In the end he had nothing but torments for all eternity. Poor Lazarus was indeed impoverished for this earthly sojourn, but at this life’s end he was received into the eternal habitations of heaven. This was not because he was poor. Salvation comes only to those who find their hope for life in God.
