THE EPISTLE LESSON: 2 Thessalonians 1:5-10
The Christian’s faith and patience in the face of persecution is evidence of the righteous judgment of God. He who preserves us in true faith now shall also deliver us at the Lord’s coming. However at that coming those who have afflicted His people shall also be afflicted. On Judgment Day Jesus shall be revealed with His holy angels in a flaming fire! He shall come to be glorified in His saints; that is all who believe. We shall marvel at His grace and glory.
THE GOSPEL LESSON: Luke 19:11-27
In this parable the nobleman who went away to receive a kingdom represents Jesus Himself. This nobleman had both servants who served Him in His absence and enemies who rejected him. The point of the parable is that there will be a day of accounting. The Lord has entrusted His treasure of the gospel to us, and has commissioned us to make good use of it in the absence of His visible presence. We may not all have the same results, but we certainly do not want to stand before the Lord in shame having hidden the gospel, and not made use of it. We are reminded of the urgency also in that those who are His enemies on that day shall be punished severely.
