THE EPISTLE LESSON: 1 Peter 1:3-21
Without doubt the persecutions and tribulations in this life test the genuineness of our faith. The holy Scriptures, given first through the prophets, were written for our learning that grace should come to us. In genuine faith we discipline our minds and hope fully in the grace of God. We turn away from the lusts of this world and live holy lives to the glory of God knowing that the most holy God redeemed us, not with silver or gold but with the precious blood of Christ.
THE GOSPEL LESSON: Luke 7:1-10
The genuine nature of the Roman centurion’s faith is seen in his humility of faith and absolute confidence in the authority of Jesus and Jesus’ word. We should have such confidence that Jesus’ possesses such authority that all that He commands will be done, and such a faith that we know that Jesus desires and directs all things for our good and blessing. This directs us on our prayers as we know the love and care of a powerful Savior.
