THE GOSPEL LESSON: Matthew 17:1-9
Right in front of Peter, James, and John, Jesus was changed. His appearance became as white as light, as brilliant as the sun. Moses and Elijah, who had long ago left this earthly pilgrimage appeared with Jesus, talking with Him. What a wondrous sight to behold; what an incredible encouragement also for Jesus who was about to enter His passion that He might be shown the fruits of His labors and sufferings! Then the voice of the Father declared an absolute endorsement of Jesus’ and Jesus’ Word.
THE OLD TESTAMENT LESSON: Isaiah 25:1-9
The Transfiguration assures us that the joy and hope of salvation which Isaiah encourages is not misplaced. Our God has done wonderful things. He has defeated our most powerful enemy. He has swallowed up death forever. He has wiped away our tears, and taken away the rebuke of our sin. We look to Jesus and say, “Behold this is our God, … We will be glad and rejoice in His salvation.” (v.9)
