THE EPISTLE LESSON: 2 Peter 1:16-21
The world accuses us of following “cunningly devised fables” in our faith in Christ. This is not the case, and we should not be intimidated into silence. We have confirmation of the Word of God in the transfiguration of Jesus and the appearance of the Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus about His impending death. No prophecy of Scripture came by man or is subject to private interpretation. “Holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit” (v.21).
THE GOSPEL LESSON: Matthew 17:1-9
They saw Jesus change! They saw the glory of the Lord! They heard the voice of the Father coming from the bright cloud, endorsing Jesus as the His beloved Son, the One man with whom God was well pleased, the One whom they should hear! It was more than they could bear, or at that time fully comprehend, much less understand. They were not to talk about this incident until after the resurrection. Now Jesus is risen form the dead and we may testify boldly to the truth of God’s Word that finds its fulfillment in Christ Jesus.
