THE OLD TESTAMENT LESSON: Genesis 22:1-9
Imagine the need to sacrifice one’s own son as a fruit of love for another! That was what the Lord asked of Abraham. Abraham’s obedience was immediate and true to the very end when the Angel of the Lord stopped Abraham, and provided another sacrifice to take Isaac’s place. During this Lenten season we focus our meditations on the sacrifice of God’s Son, a sacrifice which the Lord completed in the death of Jesus upon the cross, a sacrifice made to redeem us from sin and death. This great sacrifice demonstrates the depth of God’s love for us and the whole world. Jesus took our place when He died, saving us from death every bit as much as the ram took Isaac’s place upon that altar which Abraham built on top of the same Mount Moriah where later Jesus would be sacrificed on the cross.
