2021-09-12 — Jesus Still Calls to Us, “Ephphatha,” – “Be Opened!”

bulletin.0002.jpg

16th Sunday after Pentecost: Date: September 12, 2021

– THE SERMON: Mark 7:31-37

Theme: Jesus Still Calls to Us, “Ephphatha,” – “Be Opened!”
I. Were We Really Spiritual Deaf — Mutes?
II. Jesus Opens our Hearts to Hear with Faith
III. Jesus Loosens Our Tongues to Confess His Name.
SERMON TEXT: Mark 7:31-37
Again, departing from the region of Tyre and Sidon, He came through the midst of the region of Decapolis to the Sea of Galilee. 32 Then they brought to Him one who was deaf and had an impediment in his speech, and they begged Him to put His hand on him. 33 And He took him aside from the multitude, and put His fingers in his ears, and He spat and touched his tongue. 34 Then, looking up to heaven, He sighed, and said to him, “Ephphatha,” that is, “Be opened.”
35 Immediately his ears were opened, and the impediment of his tongue was loosed, and he spoke plainly. 36 Then He commanded them that they should tell no one; but the more He commanded them, the more widely they proclaimed it. 37 And they were astonished beyond measure, saying, “He has done all things well. He makes both the deaf to hear and the mute to speak.” (NKJV)
PRAYER; THE LORD’S PRAYER

HYMN: A Wretched man, Both Mute and Deaf
Author Unknown – Tune of TLH 371
1. A wretched man, both mute and deaf,
Was brought to Jesus for relief;
He came to know the Savior’s pow’r,
When he received a wondrous cure.
2. The Savior used but simple means,
Such as the haughty world disdains;
When He first took him from the throng,
To make him hear and loose his tongue.

3. His “Ephphatha,” His sigh and look,
Through all the pow’rs of darkness broke;
He loosed the devil’s dreadful chain,
The man could hear and speak again!
4. Are we not also deaf and mute,
And wretched creatures from our youth?
We cannot speak the Savior’s praise,
Until we hear His Word of grace:
5. The chain of sin our Savior broke,
Our guilt upon Himself He took;
He died that we might now be free,
And with Him live eternally.
6. When we are taken from the crowd,
And with this light and grace endow’d;
Then by His Word we come to know,
Our Savior’s wondrous healing, too.
7. Now of His wonders we can tell,
And testify that all is well;
Then grace on other hearts will break –
The deaf will hear, the mute will speak!
BENEDICTION
C: Amen.
HYMN 50:1-2 Lord, Dismiss Us with Thy Blessing
1. Lord, dismiss us with Thy blessing, Fill our hearts with joy and peace.
Let us each, Thy love possessing, Triumph in redeeming grace.
Oh, refresh us, Oh, refresh us, Trav’ling thro’ this wilderness!
2. Thanks we give and adoration For Thy Gospel’s joyful sound.
May the fruits of Thy salvation In our hearts and lives abound;
Ever faithful, Ever faithful To the Truth may we be found

15th Sunday after Pentecost: Date: September 5, 2021

– THE SERMON: Ephesians 6:10-20

Theme: Live Dressed for Battle
I. Know the Enemy
II. Put on the Armor of the Gospel.
III. Pray with Perseverance.
SERMON TEXT: Ephesians 6:10-20
“Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
14 Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; 18 praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints— 19 and for me, that utterance may be given to me, that I may open my mouth boldly to make known the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains; that in it I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak. (NKJV)
PRAYER; THE LORD’S PRAYER
HYMN 398 Renew Me, O Eternal Light
1 Renew me, O eternal Light,
And let my heart and soul be bright,
Illumined with the light of grace
That issues from Thy holy face.
2 Destroy in me the lust of sin;
From all impureness make me clean.
Oh, grant me pow’r and strength, my God,
To strive against my flesh and blood.
3 Create in me a new heart, Lord,
That gladly I obey Thy Word.
And naught but what Thou wilt, desire;
With such new life my soul inspire.
4 Grant that I only Thee may love
And seek those things which are above
Till I behold Thee face to face,
O Light eternal, through Thy grace.
BENEDICTION
C: Amen.
HYMN 655 I Pray Thee, Dear Lord Jesus
I pray Thee, dear Lord Jesus, My heart to keep and train
That I Thy holy temple From youth to age remain.
Turn thou my thoughts forever From worldly wisdom’s lore;
If I but learn to know Thee, I shall not want for more.

14th Sunday after Pentecost: Date: August 29, 2021

– THE SERMON: Joshua 24:1-2, 14-18

Theme: The Lord Himself Calls Us to Serve the Lord!
I. Serve Him in Sincerity and Truth.
II. Serve Him for He Is Our God and Savior.
SERMON TEXT: Joshua 24:1-2, 14-18
Then Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to Shechem and called for the elders of Israel, for their heads, for their judges, and for their officers; and they presented themselves before God. 2 And Joshua said to all the people, “Thus says the LORD God of Israel: ‘Your fathers, including Terah, the father of Abraham and the father of Nahor, dwelt on the other side of the River in old times; and they served other gods. …
14 “Now therefore, fear the LORD, serve Him in sincerity and in truth, and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the River and in Egypt. Serve the LORD! 15 And if it seems evil to you to serve the LORD, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”
16 So the people answered and said: “Far be it from us that we should forsake the LORD to serve other gods; 17 for the LORD our God is He who brought us and our fathers up out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage, who did those great signs in our sight, and preserved us in all the way that we went and among all the people through whom we passed. 18 And the LORD drove out from before us all the people, including the Amorites who dwelt in the land. We also will serve the LORD, for He is our God.” (NKJV)
PRAYER; THE LORD’S PRAYER
HYMN 307 Draw Nigh and Take the Body of the Lord,
1 Draw nigh and take the Body of the Lord,
And drink the holy Blood for you outpoured.
Offered was He for greatest and for least,
Himself the Victim and Himself the Priest.
2 He that His saints in this world rules and shields,
To all believers life eternal yields,
With heav’nly bread makes them that hunger whole,
Gives living waters to the thirsting soul.
3 Approach ye, then, with faithful hearts sincere,
And take the pledges of salvation here.
O Judge of all, our only Savior Thou,
In this Thy feast of love to be with us now.

11th Sunday after Pentecost: Date: August 8, 2021

– THE SERMON: John 6:24-35

Theme: Jesus: The Source of True Spiritual Provisions
I. Chasing After Jesus for All the Wrong Reasons
II. Finding in Jesus those Provisions Necessary for Spiritual Life
SERMON TEXT: John 6:24-35
“When the people therefore saw that Jesus was not there, nor His disciples, they also got into boats and came to Capernaum, seeking Jesus. 25 And when they found Him on the other side of the sea, they said to Him, “Rabbi, when did You come here?”
26 Jesus answered them and said, “Most assuredly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw the signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled. 27 Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has set His seal on Him.”
28 Then they said to Him, “What shall we do, that we may work the works of God?” 29 Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent.”
30 Therefore they said to Him, “What sign will You perform then, that we may see it and believe You? What work will You do? 31 Our fathers ate the manna in the desert; as it is written, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’ ”
32 Then Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, Moses did not give you the bread from heaven, but My Father gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”
34 Then they said to Him, “Lord, give us this bread always.”
35 And Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst. (NKJV)
PRAYER; THE LORD’S PRAYER
HYMN 48 How Blest Are They Who Hear God’s Word
1 How blest are they who hear God’s Word,
And keep and heed what they have heard!
They wisdom daily gather;
Their light shines brighter day by day,
And while they tread life’s weary way,
They have the oil of gladness
To soothe their pain and sadness.
2 God’s Word a treasure is to me,
Thro’ sorrow’s night my sun shall be,
The shield of faith in battle.
The Father’s hand hath written there
My title as His child and heir,
“The kingdom’s thine forever.”
That promise faileth never.
3 Today I was my Savior’s guest;
My soul was here so richly blest,
The Bread of Life receiving.
Oh, may thereby my faith prevail,
So that its fruits shall never fail
Till my account is given
Before the throne in heaven!
BENEDICTION
C: Amen.
HYMN 53:1-4 Abide, O dearest Jesus
1 Abide, O dearest Jesus, Among us with Thy grace
That Satan may not harm us Nor we to sin give place.
2 Abide, O dear Redeemer, Among us with Thy Word,
And thus now and hereafter True peace and joy afford.
3 Abide with heav’nly brightness Among us, precious Light;
Thy truth direct and keep us From error’s gloomy night.
4 Abide with richest blessings Among us, bounteous Lord;
Let us in grace and wisdom Grow daily through Thy Word.

This I say, therefore, and testify in the Lord, that you should no longer walk as the rest of the Gentiles walk, in the futility of their mind, 18 having their understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart; 19 who, being past feeling, have given themselves over to lewdness, to work all uncleanness with greediness.

2021-08-01 — Striving Together as One Body in Christ

bulletin.0002.jpg

10th Sunday after Pentecost: Date: August 1, 2021

– THE SERMON: Ephesians 4:1-7, 11-16

Theme: Striving Together as One Body in Christ
I. Having a Walk in Life Worthy of Our Calling
II. Participating in the Building Up of the Church
SERMON TEXT: Ephesians 4:1-7, 11-16
I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called, 2 with all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love, 3 endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. 4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling; 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism; 6 one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all. But to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of Christ’s gift. …
And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, 12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, 13 till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ; 14 that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting, 15 but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head—Christ— 16 from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love. (NKJV)
PRAYER; THE LORD’S PRAYER

HYMN 439 O God of Mercy, God of Might
1 O God of mercy, God of might,
In love and pity infinite,
Teach us, as ever in Thy sight,
To live our life to Thee.
2 And Thou, who cam’st on earth to die
That fallen man might live thereby,
Oh, hear us; for to Thee we cry,
In hope, O Lord, to Thee.
3 Teach us the lesson Thou hast taught,
To feel for those Thy blood hath bo’t,
That ev’ry word and deed and tho’t
May work a work for Thee.
4 All are redeemed, both far and wide,
Since Thou, O Lord, for all hast died,
Oh, teach us, whatsoe’er betide,
To love them all in Thee!
5 In sickness, sorrow, want, or care,
Whate’er it be, ’tis ours to share;
May we, when help is needed, there
Give help as unto Thee!
6 And may Thy Holy Spirit move
All those who live to live in love,
Till Thou shalt greet in heaven above
All those who live to Thee.
BENEDICTION
C: Amen.
HYMN 283 God’s Word Is Our Great Heritage
God’s Word is our great heritage,
And shall be ours forever;
To spread its light from age to age
Shall be our chief endeavor.
Through life it guides our way;
In death it is our stay.
Lord, grant, while worlds endure,
We keep its teachings pure,
Throughout all generations.

Behold, I will attend to you for the evil of your doings,” says the LORD. 3 “But I will gather the remnant of My flock out of all countries where I have driven them, and bring them back to their folds; and they shall be fruitful and increase. 4 I will set up shepherds over them who will feed them; and they shall fear no more, nor be dismayed, nor shall they be lacking,” says the LORD.

10 Also He said to them, “In whatever place you enter a house, stay there till you depart from that place. 11 And whoever will not receive you nor hear you, when you depart from there, shake off the dust under your feet as a testimony against them. Assuredly, I say to you, it will be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment than for that city!” 12 So they went out and preached that people should repent. 13 And they cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many who were sick, and healed them. – THE SERMON: 2 Corinthians 12:7-10

Theme: The Blessing of Adversity in Serving the Lord
I. Adversity Reveals our Need of God’s Grace
II. Adversity Reveals Human Weakness and Divine Power
SERMON TEXT: 2 Corinthians 12:7-10
And lest I should be exalted above measure by the abundance of the revelations, a thorn in the flesh was given to me, a messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I be exalted above measure. 8 Concerning this thing I pleaded with the Lord three times that it might depart from me. 9 And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 10 Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ’s sake. For when I am weak, then I am strong.
(NKJV)
PRAYER; THE LORD’S PRAYER
HYMN 19:1,3,5,6 All Praise to God, Who Reigns Above
1 All praise to God, who reigns above,
The God of all creation,
The God of wonders, pow’r, and love,
The God of our salvation!
With healing balm my soul He fills,
The God who ev’ry sorrow stills,–
To God all praise and glory!
3 I cried to Him in time of need:
Lord God, oh, hear my calling!
For death He gave me life indeed
And kept my feet from falling.
For this my thanks shall endless be;
Oh, thank Him, thank our God, with me,–
To God all praise and glory!
5 Ye who confess Christ’s holy name,
To God give praise and glory!
Ye who the Father’s pow’r proclaim,
To God give praise and glory!
All idols under foot be trod,
The Lord is God! The Lord is God!
To God all praise and glory!
6 Then come before His presence now
And banish fear and sadness;
To your Redeemer pay your vow
And sing with joy and gladness:
Though great distress my soul befell,
The Lord, my God, did all things well–
To God all praise and glory!

BENEDICTION;

bulletin.0002.jpg

5th Sunday after Pentecost: Date: June 27, 2021

– THE SERMON: Romans 3: 21-25a, 27-28

Theme: Attaining True Righteousness
I. The Ever Elusive Righteousness of the Law
II. The Righteousness that Comes to Us from God
SERMON TEXT: Romans 3:21-25a,27-28
21 But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, 22 even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on all who believe. For there is no difference; 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, … 27 Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? Of works? No, but by the law of faith. 28 Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith apart from the deeds of the law. (NKJV)
PRAYER; THE LORD’S PRAYER
Hymn 371: 1-4 Jesus, Thy Blood and Righteousness
1. Jesus, Thy blood and righteousness
My beauty are, my glorious dress;
Midst flaming worlds in these arrayed,
With joy shall I lift up my head.
2. Bold shall I stand in that great Day,
For who aught to my charge shall lay?
Fully thro’ these absolved I am
From sin and fear from guilt and shame.

3. The holy, meek, unspotted Lamb,
Who from the Father’s bosom came,
Who died for me, e’en me t’atone,
Now for my Lord and God I own.
4. Lord, I believe Thy precious blood,
Which at the mercy seat of God
Forever doth for sinners plead,
For me – e’en for my soul – was shed.
BENEDICTION;

Hymn 50:2 Thanks We Give and Adoration
2. Thanks we give and adoration For Thy Gospel’s joyful sound.
May the fruits of Thy salvation In our hearts and lives abound;
Ever faithful, Ever faithful To the Truth may we be found!
