2021-01-17 — What the World Needs to Hear from Us.

2nd Sunday after Epiphany: Date: January 17, 2021

– THE SERMON: Acts 16:25-34

Theme: What the World Needs to Hear from Us.
I. In Our Trial – Hymns of Praise to God
II. In their Despair – God’s Forgiveness in Christ
SERMON TEXT: Acts 16:25-34
But at midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them. 26 Suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened and everyone’s chains were loosed. 27 And the keeper of the prison, awaking from sleep and seeing the prison doors open, supposing the prisoners had fled, drew his sword and was about to kill himself. 28 But Paul called with a loud voice, saying, “Do yourself no harm, for we are all here.”
29 Then he called for a light, ran in, and fell down trembling before Paul and Silas. 30 And he brought them out and said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”
31 So they said, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household.” 32 Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all who were in his house. 33 And he took them the same hour of the night and washed their stripes. And immediately he and all his family were baptized. 34 Now when he had brought them into his house, he set food before them; and he rejoiced, having believed in God with all his household. (NKJV)
PRAYER; THE LORD’S PRAYER
HYMN 531 Come, Ye Disconsolate
1. Come, ye disconsolate, where’er ye languish
Come to the Mercy-seat, fervently kneel.
Here bring your wounded hearts, here tell your anguish;
Earth has no sorrow that Heav’n cannot heal.
2. Joy of the desolate, Light of the straying,
Hope of the penitent, fadeless and pure;
Here speaks the Comforter, tenderly saying,
Earth has no sorrow that Heav’n cannot cure.
3. Here see the Bread of Life; see waters flowing
Forth from the throne of God, pure from above.
Come to the feast of love; come, ever knowing
Earth has no sorrow but Heav’n can remove.

2021-01-10 — Epiphany: The Lord’s “Merry Christmas” to YOU!

1st Sunday after Epiphany: Date: January 10, 2021

– THE SERMON: Isaiah 60:1-6

Theme: Epiphany: The Lord’s “Merry Christmas” to YOU!
I. Christmas Light Shines on the Gentiles
II. Observe the Wondrous Spread of the Gospel throughout the World.
III. Respond from a Grateful Heart
SERMON TEXT: Isaiah 60:1-6
Arise, shine;
For your light has come!
And the glory of the LORD is risen upon you.
2 For behold, the darkness shall cover the earth,
And deep darkness the people;
But the LORD will arise over you,
And His glory will be seen upon you.
3 The Gentiles shall come to your light,
And kings to the brightness of your rising.
4 “Lift up your eyes all around, and see:
They all gather together, they come to you;
Your sons shall come from afar,
And your daughters shall be nursed at your side.
5 Then you shall see and become radiant,
And your heart shall swell with joy;
Because the abundance of the sea shall be turned to you,
The wealth of the Gentiles shall come to you.
6 The multitude of camels shall cover your land,
The dromedaries of Midian and Ephah;
All those from Sheba shall come;
They shall bring gold and incense,
And they shall proclaim the praises of the LORD. (NKJV)

PRAYER; THE LORD’S PRAYER

HYMN 128:1-4 Brightest and Best of the Sons of the Morning
1. Brightest and best of the sons of the morning
Dawn on our darkness and lend us thine aid;
Star of the East, the horizon adorning,
Guide where our infant Redeemer is laid.
2. Cold on His cradle the dewdrops are shining;
Low lies His head with the beasts of the stall.
Angels adore Him in slumber reclining,
Maker and Monarch and Savior of all.
3. Shall we not yield Him, in costly devotion,
Odors of Edom and offerings divine.
Gems of the mountains and pearls of the oceans,
Myrrh from the forest and gold from the mine?
4. Vainly we offer each ample oblation,
Vainly with gifts would His favor secure.
Richer by far is the heart’s adoration;
Dearer to God are the prayers of the poor.
BENEDICTION;
C: Amen.
Hymn 127:4,5 “Holy Jesus, Every Day”
4. Holy Jesus, every day Keep us in the narrow way;
And, when earthly things are past, Bring our ransomed souls at last
Where They need no star to guide, Where no clouds Thy glory hide.
5. In the heavenly country bright Need they no created light;
Thou its Light, its Joy, its Crown, Thou its Sun which goes not down,
There forever may we sing Allelulias to our King!

THE EPISTLE LESSON: Ephesians 3:2-12
If indeed you have heard of the dispensation of the grace of God which was given to me for you, 3 how that by revelation He made known to me the mystery (as I have briefly written already, 4 by which, when you read, you may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ), 5 which in other ages was not made known to the sons of men, as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to His holy apostles and prophets: 6 that the Gentiles should be fellow heirs, of the same body, and partakers of His promise in Christ through the gospel, 7 of which I became a minister according to the gift of the grace of God given to me by the effective working of His power.

THE GOSPEL LESSON: Matthew 2:1-12
Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, 2 saying, “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him.”

2021-01-03 — The Word Became Flesh

2nd Sunday after Christmas: Date: January 3, 2021

– THE SERMON: John 1:1-5,14

Theme: The Word Became Flesh
I. Identifying the Word
II. Illuminating a Dark World
III. Revealing the Grace of God
SERMON TEXT: John 1:1-5,14
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. 4 In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.
14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. (NKJV)
PRAYER; THE LORD’S PRAYER
HYMN 96: Oh, Rejoice, Ye Christians, Loudly
1. Oh rejoice, ye Christians, loudly, for our joy hath now begun;
Wondrous things our God hath done. Tell abroad His goodness proudly
Who our race hath honored thus That He deigns to dwell with us.
Joy, O joy, beyond all gladness, Christ hath done away with sadness!
Hence, all sorrow and repining For the Sun of Grace is shining!
2. See, my soul, Thy Savior chooses Weakness here and poverty;
In such love He comes to thee Nor the hardest couch refuses;
All He suffers for thy good, to redeem thee by His blood.
Joy, O joy, beyond all gladness, Christ hath done away with sadness!
Hence, all sorrow and repining For the Sun of Grace is shining!
3. Lord, how shall I thank Thee rightly? I acknowledge that by Thee
I am saved eternally. Let me not forget it lightly,
But to Thee at all times cleave And my heart true peace receive.
Joy, O joy, beyond all gladness, Christ hath done away with sadness!
Hence, all sorrow and repining For the Sun of Grace is shining!
4. Jesus, guard and guide Thy members, Fill Thy brethren with Thy grace,
Hear their prayers in every place. Quicken now life’s faintest embers;
Grant all Christians, far and near, Holy peace, a glad New Year!
Joy, O joy, beyond all gladness, Christ hath done away with sadness!
Hence, all sorrow and repining For the Sun of Grace is shining!
BENEDICTION;
C: Amen.
Hymn 97:1,4 Let Us All with Gladsome Voice
1. Let us all with gladsome voice Praise the God of heaven,
Who to bid our hearts rejoice, His own Son hath given.
4. O Lord Christ, our Savior dear, Be Thou ever near us.
Grant us now a glad new year. Amen, Jesus, hear us!

2020-12-27 — Living in the Spirit of Christmas

Sunday after Christmas: Date: December 27, 2020

– THE SERMON: Colossians 3:12-17

Theme: Living in the Spirit of Christmas
I. Putting on Your Christmas Attire
II. Possessing Christmas Spirituality
SERMON TEXT: Colossians 3:12-17
Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; 13 bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do. 14 But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection. 15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful. 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. 17 And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him. (NKJV)
PRAYER; THE LORD’S PRAYER
HYMN 108:1,5,6,8 We Sing, Immanuel, Thy Praise
1We sing, Immanuel, Thy praise,
Thou Prince of Life and Fount of grace,
Thou Flow’r of heav’n and Star of morn,
Thou Lord of lords, Thou Virgin-born, Hal-le-lu-jah!
5But I, Thy servant, Lord, today
Confess my love and freely say,
I love Thee truly, but I would
That I might love Thee as I should. Hal-le-lu-jah!
6I have the will, the power is weak;
Yet, Lord, my humble offering take
And graciously the love receive
Which my poor heart to Thee can give. Hal-le-lu-jah!
8Thus will I sing Thy praises here
With joyful spirit year by year;
And when we reckon years no more,
May I in heaven Thy name adore! Hal-le-lu-jah!
BENEDICTION;
C: Amen.
Hymn 97:1, 4 Let Us All with Gladsome Voice

Seek the great Desire of nations, Ye have seen His natal star:

SERMON TEXT: 2 Samuel 7:8-16
8 Now therefore, thus shall you say to My servant David, ‘Thus says the LORD of hosts: “I took you from the sheepfold, from following the sheep, to be ruler over My people, over Israel. 9 And I have been with you wherever you have gone, and have cut off all your enemies from before you, and have made you a great name, like the name of the great men who are on the earth. 10 Moreover I will appoint a place for My people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in a place of their own and move no more; nor shall the sons of wickedness oppress them anymore, as previously, 11 since the time that I commanded judges to be over My people Israel, and have caused you to rest from all your enemies. Also the LORD tells you that He will make you a house.
12 “When your days are fulfilled and you rest with your fathers, I will set up your seed after you, who will come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. 14 I will be his Father, and he shall be My son. If he commits iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men and with the blows of the sons of men. 15 But My mercy shall not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I removed from before you. 16 And your house and your kingdom shall be established forever before you. Your throne shall be established forever.” ’ (NKJV)

Paul, a bondservant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated to the gospel of God 2 which He promised before through His prophets in the Holy Scriptures, 3 concerning His Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who was born of the seed of David according to the flesh, 4 and declared to be the Son of God with power according to the Spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead. 5 Through Him we have received grace and apostleship for obedience to the faith among all nations for His name, 6 among whom you also are the called of Jesus Christ; 7 To all who are in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Theme: Following John’s Pattern of Testimony
I. Bearing Witness of the Light that Is Christ
II. Keeping the Focus on Jesus
SERMON TEXT: John 1:6-8, 19-29
6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7 This man came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all through him might believe. 8 He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. … 19 Now this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?”
20 He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, “I am not the Christ.”
21 And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?”
He said, “I am not.”
“Are you the Prophet?”
And he answered, “No.”
22 Then they said to him, “Who are you, that we may give an answer to those who sent us? What do you say about yourself?”
23 He said: “I am
‘The voice of one crying in the wilderness:
“Make straight the way of the Lord,” ’
as the prophet Isaiah said.”
24 Now those who were sent were from the Pharisees. 25 And they asked him, saying, “Why then do you baptize if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”
26 John answered them, saying, “I baptize with water, but there stands One among you whom you do not know. 27 It is He who, coming after me, is preferred before me, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose.”
28 These things were done in Bethabara beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! (NKJV)

– THE SERMON: 2 Peter 3:8-14

Theme: Looking Forward to the Day of the Lord
I. Understanding the Timing
II. Shaping our Lives for that Glorious Reality
SERMON TEXT: 2 Peter 3:8-14
“But, beloved, do not forget this one thing, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. 9 The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.
10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up. 11 Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be dissolved, being on fire, and the elements will melt with fervent heat? 13 Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells. 14 Therefore, beloved, looking forward to these things, be diligent to be found by Him in peace, without spot and blameless.” (NKJV)
PRAYER; THE LORD’S PRAYER
HYMN 64: 1, 3, 5: Jesus, Thy Church with Longing Eyes
1. Jesus, Thy Church with longing eyes
For Thine expected coming waits.
When will the promised light arise
And glory beam from Zion’s gates?
3. Come, gracious Lord, our hearts renew,
Our foes repel, our wrongs redress,
Man’s rooted enmity subdue,
And crown Thy gospel with success.
5. Teach us in watchfulness and prayer
To wait for the appointed hour
And fit us by Thy grace to share
The triumphs of Thy conquering power.
BENEDICTION;
C: Amen.
Hymn 50:2-3 Thanks We Give and Adoration
2. Thanks we give and adoration For Thy Gospel’s joyful sound.
May the fruits of Thy salvation In our hearts and lives abound;
Ever faithful, Ever faithful To the Truth may we be found!
3. So whene’er the signal’s given Us from earth to call away,
Borne on angels’ wings to heaven Glad the summons to obey,
May we ever, May we ever, Reign with Christ in endless day!

There they shall lie down in a good fold and feed in rich pasture on the mountains of Israel. 15 I will feed My flock, and I will make them lie down,” says the Lord GOD. 16 “I will seek what was lost and bring back what was driven away, bind up the broken and strengthen what was sick; but I will destroy the fat and the strong, and feed them in judgment.” …
23 I will establish one shepherd over them, and he shall feed them—My servant David. He shall feed them and be their shepherd. 24 And I, the LORD, will be their God, and My servant David a prince among them; I, the LORD, have spoken. (NKJV)

THE EPISTLE LESSON: 1 Corinthians 15:20-28
But now Christ is risen from the dead, and has become the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. 21 For since by man came death, by Man also came the resurrection of the dead. 22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive. 23 But each one in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, afterward those who are Christ’s at His coming. 24 Then comes the end, when He delivers the kingdom to God the Father, when He puts an end to all rule and all authority and power. 25 For He must reign till He has put all enemies under His feet. 26 The last enemy that will be destroyed is death. 27 For “He has put all things under His feet.” But when He says “all things are put under Him,” it is evident that He who put all things under Him is excepted. 28 Now when all things are made subject to Him, then the Son Himself will also be subject to Him who put all things under Him, that God may be all in all. (NKJV)

THE GOSPEL LESSON: Matthew 27:27-31
Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole garrison around Him. 28 And they stripped Him and put a scarlet robe on Him. 29 When they had twisted a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and a reed in His right hand. And they bowed the knee before Him and mocked Him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” 30 Then they spat on Him, and took the reed and struck Him on the head. 31 And when they had mocked Him, they took the robe off Him, put His own clothes on Him, and led Him away to be crucified.
